Halloween in Ashenvale

The pumpkins awaken

Every year, when the nights grow long, something starts growing in the hunting grounds.

1

Break pumpkins

Big Honey Pumpkins grow in the hunting grounds of your level. Each one you break is a surprise. Sometimes nothing happens, sometimes a Goblin Ghoul wakes with its escort, and sometimes Jack o’ Lantern comes out.

2

Pay Jack… or don’t

Jack has to be paid. With candy you keep hunting; without it, he plays a trick on you, which can be a curse in town or, worse, a one-way trip to the Dark Fortress.

3

Escape the fortress

Inside wait its monsters, the Pumpkin Robots, the Goblin Ghouls and the Pumpkin King, and other characters too. You get out once you rack up 50 kills or when 20 minutes have passed, with whatever loot you managed to defend.

4

Claim your reward

Candy is traded with Rico, the merchant you will find in the towns. And what you hunt is not lost, because the Spectral Master writes it down and pays you in rewards.

Autofarm never fights Halloween monsters. While it is on it never picks them as a target, and your attacks and skills on them are refused. Turn it off and hunt them by hand.

The story of Halloween in Ashenvale

Rumor has it that when the nights start growing long, something changes in the world. Hunters come back from the fields talking about pumpkins that were not there yesterday, fat and grinning. Nobody knows who plants them.

The old ones say Jack often prowls around them, a pumpkin-headed warlock who does nothing for free and lies in wait for whoever breaks them, and that his twin brother Rico walks the towns trading candy for things nobody else sells. And some swear there is a dark fortress that appears on no map, where many of those who refuse to pay Jack end up.

One morning huge pumpkins with a grin nobody carved show up in the open world. That is how it all begins. Break one and you will find out what it was keeping inside.

Sometimes a Goblin Ghoul crawls out of the rind, spawned in the pulp. It never comes alone. Its bone escort rises with it and fights as one. Destroy them all and the pumpkin pays out, with candy, scrolls and Halloween rewards.

Other times, instead of the Goblin Ghoul, Jack o’ Lantern shows up, the prankster warlock. He is a freeloader who comes not to fight but for your candy, and he lets nobody go without paying. With his magic he binds you to the ground and forces you to choose between handing over some of your sweets or taking one of his tricks.

There is one thing Jack cannot stand, and that is bullies who smash pumpkins far below their strength. He does not even ask them. He always sends them to one of the towns wearing some cursed look, so everyone sees them go by. With everyone else, his game goes on: trick or treat.

Jack’s tricks are spells. He can send you to one of the area’s towns with a curse on you and a different look, a giant head or a shrunken body, that stays until you hunt down the monsters it asks for. Or he can do something worse.

The worst of his tricks is called the Dark Fortress. No road leads there and no door leads out. Jack drags you in, and the fortress decides when you leave. To escape you must destroy its monsters or survive as long as it demands. And you are not alone, because others fell in too, and inside nobody forbids them from killing each other. Even that seems to come with a reward.

The fortress has powers of its own. When you try to escape, it sends you back to its galleries with a simple spell. Many kinds of creatures roam there, the Goblin Ghouls and the King among them. Once you cross the first halls, there is no way back to the entrance. Vortexes spin on the inner bridges, unable to stand anyone keeping still, and wraiths roam every corner. Together they watch anyone who tries to hide and hurl them at the feet of the fortress’s monsters.

The galleries are never empty. The Grim archers and the Cursed Housemaids are the most numerous; with them roam the Graves, the Headless Knights, the Doom Servant mages and the wraiths. None of them is a boss, but there are many and they come back quickly, and every one that falls brings you a little closer to the way out.

Among them walk two tougher prey. The Pumpkin Robot, a possessed pumpkin with iron fists, gives back part of every hit it takes. And in almost every dimension waits the fortress’s own Goblin Ghoul, stronger than the one outside and with an escort of its own. They take more killing, but the loot is worth it.

At the heart of the place waits the Pumpkin King, never in the same spot twice. It appears in one of the wings, surrounded by its guards, and everyone hears about it. Only the lowest dimension has no king, and a Goblin Ghoul with its escort rules there instead. It is not a foe for one character alone, much less for just anyone, but when it falls it drops the best loot of any monster.

It lifts its enemies into a whirlwind and slams them into the ground, heals when hurt, calls its escort and goes berserk when its life runs low.

Everything you gather in there, the King’s loot included, still belongs to the fortress until you get out. If you die, much of it may be left on the ground, and if another warrior killed you, the odds are even higher. But beware, whoever carries that loot afterwards will share the same fate until they manage to escape.

With candy in your pocket, look for Rico, Jack’s twin brother. He has the same sweet tooth, but he plays no pranks and casts no spells. He prefers trading. You will find him in the towns, beside the big pumpkin.
